About Us

A Slice of Pi is a student-run newspaper that brings you news from the Math and Science Academy. Back in the good ole’ days of 2010, three MSA sixth graders had an extraordinary idea: to start a school newspaper. These “sixlets” found an advisor (Mrs. Kurkoski!) and students to join their newspaper, which they called “A Slice of Pi.” In their first year, they published their newspaper on a free website since they did not have any money. Since that first awesome year, A Slice of Pi has grown in so many ways. The newspaper has gone from publishing online, to printing the issues tabloid-style, to printing issues on real newsprint, to having a real CNN-style website. With these changes, the newspaper has gained so many more readers and writers. A Slice of Pi improves more and more with each school year. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the future, and we hope you can’t wait either!

Here’s a list of our writers, and some information about each one.

Editors:

Editor-in-Chief: Lauren Paulson

Hi! My name is Lauren, and I’m entering my fifth year in newspaper, my second year being Editor-in-Chief, and my junior year of high school. When I’m not writing you can find me in theater, singing, reading, or playing with my dog.

Assistant Editor: Sam Wurdemann

Salutations, I’m Sam Wurdemann, the Assistant Editor. I’m a sophomore, an aspiring actor, a writer, and a composer. I also direct community productions over the summer for youngins.

Communications Editor: Thomas Nelson

Greetings, all! My name is Thomas D. Nelson, and I am the Communications Editor for A Slice of Pi. This will be my sixth year being a part of MSA’s official newspaper, along with my second-to-last. I enjoy writing and performing comedic dramas, drinking forms of caffeinated beverages, and seeing how crazy I can drive Patrick before he runs away.

Web Master: Patrick Steury

Please help me. Thomas is driving me crazy. Like, I think I’m going to run away. If I vanish one day, tell Thomas that I hope he’s happy.

Staff Writers:

Maya Crandall

Hey there! I’m Maya Crandall, and this is my second year of being one of the fantastical staff writers on newspaper. I’m a freshman theatre geek who mainly survives off of chocolate and books. I’ve also played piano for over seven years. A fun fact about me: my first acting gig was when I was a teakettle in a Beauty and the Beast rendition at Disney World! Also, I’m an aspiring author who hopes to get her words into the world one day!

Maya Dalal

Hello! I’m Maya Dalal and I’m in 9th grade. I’m one of the many staff writers here, but I also double as a musical theatre nerd and a fan of superheroes! Fun fact about me, I have grapheme-color synesthesia! It means that I perceive symbols and shapes in different colors and sizes than other people do.

XuYing Lee

Hello! I’m XuYing, this is my second year in the newspaper. I’m a staff writer at A Slice of Pi newspaper. I am a theatre geek, love reading, and loves writing and singing. I also have an adorable lazy dog.

Aala Rashid

My name is Aala Rashid, and this is my second year in Newspaper and junior year of high school. I’ve always had a passion for writing and I finally can express my thoughts doing it with this amazing club! When I’m not writing, I like to read, watch movies, and take walks!

Rowan Raverty

Hello, people on this website! I’m Rowan Raverty and this is my second year in Newspaper. I’m a Staff writer and a freshman in high school. I’m a giant bookworm, art geek, story creator, and an all-out nerd. You can see me doing anything creative!  I also reuse some of my characters so you might see them in multiple stories I write. If I’m not doing any of those things, I would either be watching crazy people on YouTube or eating grapes.

Kevin Chen

New student—upcoming writer—knowledge lover—likes linguistics—attempting music—daydreams tales—uses rudimentary ploys on rhetoric to appear smart and poetic but ends up looking like a pretentious fool—enjoys webcomics—friendless.

Chloe Proctor

My name is Chloe, and this is my first year with the newspaper. I am in seventh grade, and I love to read and dance.

Bella Trinko

Hi, I’m Bella Trinko, and this my first year in Newspaper. I am in seventh grade. I love to read, I love Marvel movies, I love animals and I love theater.

Miles Garcia

Hi, I’m Miles. A couple things about me are that I love to play baseball and soccer. I also love to go to sports events. When I am not writing I am usually hanging out with my friends or playing with my dogs. One fun fact about me is that I am in the process of writing multiple plays.

McKayla Pierce

Hi, my name is McKayla Pierce. This is my first year on newspaper and I am in ninth grade. I really like singing, dancing, all things art, theater, exploring nature, playing games, reading(mostly Harry Potter), and watching movies(Disney, Marvel, etc.).

Soren Thurlow

Hi, I’m Soren and this is my first year doing newspaper, so if I suck at everything… I don’t know, blame someone. Also in my free time, I play with my doggo and watch youtube. Also, I hope to write short stories on the newspaper (I guess that’s the trend).

Annie Zhang
